How Much Mulch is Too Much?

Tips for mulching trees in your yard. When you are mulching around your trees this Spring, avoid the “mulch volcano”.  This is when the layer of mulch gets deeper the closer it gets to the tree.  Too much mulch around the base of a tree can inhibit water absorption to the roots, create a welcoming environment for rodent pests and diseases, and cause root suffocation.

Examples of proper tree mulching techniques.

Keep the layer of mulch around the base of a tree to 2″.  This will allow the water to be absorbed and reach the roots, while inhibiting weed growth and creating shade for the roots.  Leaf and wood chip mulches are ideal, and young trees are always in need of a mulch surrounding.
